FAQ
What is the minimum age for lessons?

Children must be at least 3.5 years old by the start of class.

When is payment due?

In the 2 weeks following enrollment, families must complete a payment plan form and select a payment plan. Payments will be automatically charged to your credit card according to the payment schedule that you select. If your payment plan selection is not submitted within 2 weeks of your enrollment, we reserve the right to cancel your spot.  Families that elect to pay in full by check must mail payment within 2 weeks of submitting the application. Mail payment to P.O. Box 265 Rocky Hill, CT 06067.   Make checks payable to The School of Swimming.

What if my child misses a class?

There are no make-ups for student absences.  If your child misses one or two days, we will try to provide some extra help during remaining class time.  Please notify the supervisor either prior to the absence or upon your child’s return to class.  If a child misses 3 or more classes due to illness, a credit will be issued for the days missed.

What is our refund policy?
  • Cancellations made more than 2 weeks before the start of your session are fully refundable.
  • Cancellations made less than 2 weeks before the start of your session will receive a full refund minus a $50 cancellation fee per cancelled session.
  • There will be no refunds for no shows.

Can I register for more than 1 set of lessons at a time?

Yes, many students take more than one session a season.

What if my child is placed in the wrong level?

If a child is placed in the wrong level, we do the best we can to relocate them to the appropriate class.  If that is not possible, we will teach them at the skill level they are at, within the class they are currently swimming in.

Do you offer Make-up classes?

No, we do not offer make-ups.

What happens if my child won’t stop crying?

We do our best to help a child feel safe and welcome in this new situation.  Particularly on the first day, a young child may miss their parents, or take a little time to get to know their instructor.  However, if a child cries continuously the first and second day, it may be a sign they are not ready for class.  If the supervisor and parent agree on the decision to withdraw the child from class, a credit for the remaining days of the session will be issued.

Can I switch class time for one day?

No.

When I get there, where do I go?

Please check in at the office on the first day of class.  After the first day, you may bring your child directly to class.

Where do I stay while my child is in class?

Parents can watch class from our patio adjacent to the pool.

What do I bring?

Please bring a bathing suit, towel, and a tie for your hair if it is long.  Bathing caps are optional.

At what level is my child able to use their goggles?

Goggles are not allowed until our fourth level Breather II.

Are classes held if it rains or storms?

We clear the pool if there is a thunder storm in the area.  Cancellations are based on our current weather conditions, which change often.

How many instructors are there per class?

There is one instructor for each class.

Is my child guaranteed to swim?

Every child learns at their own rate.  We do our best to help every child learn to the fullness of their potential at the time of class.

How many classes does it take to be a safe swimmer?

By the time a child has completed intermediate class, they know the basic strokes to handle themselves in open water swimming. Our highest standard class is Advanced Techniques, which further enhances the competence of each swimmer.

Is it an indoor or outdoor pool?

All of our lessons are taught in indoor pools.

What is the water temperature?

The temperature of the water at our Rocky Hill pool is around 88 degrees.  The water temperature at our other sites (Farmington and Wethersfield) is generally between 82 and 84 degrees.

Where do you find your instructors and how are they trained?

Most of our instructors grew up in our program as students themselves.  At age 13 they are eligible to be volunteer instructor aides.  The minimum age for instructors is 16, and our staff range from age 16 to staff in their twenties.   We require our instructors to have Red Cross Lifeguard Training, which includes first aid and CPR.  Our teaching program is our own; all of our staff receives our instructor training.
